I pained a nice 40k army based on Dark Angels (deathwing mostly) but using a nice rich gold with some contrasting reds and blacks and after much deliberation I have decided to paint an epic army of the same style I havent painted any small dudes before so it was a bit of a challenge, plus I have read on many forums that the base really makes or breaks an epic army so I needed something that would contrast well with gold and so I decided to try snow bases. I have never done snow before so its all a bit of an experiment. I decided to try 'Ruined City in Snow' as the base theme and here is my 1st tac unit 40k paintjobs Epic Base ready for a rhino. I decided to go for a lamp post and some snow cleared part of the road showing that it has been used Ultra closeup of squad sgt

Very nice mango - to have a 40K army that you can then use in larger games of Epic is something I'd love to have... Especially if you're involved in campaigns. The colour scheme's great & the bases do make them stand out. Kudos on the Rhino base with the street lamp! Looks cool... Looking forward to seeing more...

thanks for your kind words guys, the first bases are pretty simple as I needed to get the snow right and base colouring etc but future bases will get a little more creative

snow is not always white
Have you experimented with a very light blue tinge to run in places throughout the snow?
I have never tried snow myself so I would not know...

no, I initially tried the snow over scortched brown hoping the dark brown would give it a very wet/frozen earth look but it just looked like rubbish so I started painting the base white with the flock on top. At this stage I dont think I am going to deviate from the 'pure white', I just dont think I have the skills for it. I was going to try a brown mushy look to vehicle tracks but as I am going with more of an urban look I am trying to use the dark grey road base with white wetish brush to 'fake' a mixed slush. This is what i have done with the rhino base. I think without the rhino it looks a little too linear and perfect, but once the rhino is positioned it covers alot of the road section so it masks it somewhat

As the 1st Tactical Detachment searched the city for the enemy the Devastator Detatchment took up positions within a ruined powerstationIt is taking me awhile to paint these as I am taking a fair bit of time on the bases. It is quite enjoyable thinking of a bit of a theme for each of the units whilst still keeping the overall theme in mind
