This was the first run for my Guard army and I was pleasantly suprised. The battlefield. I set my Guard up close together in order to defend from air attack. We forgot to take more photos... D'oh! The Manticores took out most of the Aarons Whirlwinds and the Shadowsword took out a Landraider every turn. The Marines tried to hammer the Baneblades (Break their Spirit objective) but couldn't crack them. The Guard Warhounds were pounding everything they shot at. The Rough Riders assaulted the Marine Bikers and thrashed them with no loss (gotta love First Strike). The Vultures all but wiped out the Marine Devastators in Razorbacks. Even when the Marines took a big chunk out of one of the Mechanised Companies, it just Marshaled and was still a very viable unit. Upshot - it was all over by the end of the 2nd turn. The Guard just plain out-gunned the Marines. Do Space Marines have an issue when dealing with War Engines? It seems that the Marines need to take Titans (or a Thunderhawk Annihilator if playing Templars) to fight War Engines or Assault everything in sight (and hope the other guy doesn't hasn't set up for this - I did )

Wow, thats pretty Impressive. I think Im gonna need to borrow your dice, its normally the other way around for me with IG verses SM. Do Space Marines have an issue when dealing with War Engines? It seems that the Marines need to take Titans (or a Thunderhawk Annihilator if playing Templars) to fight War Engines or Assault everything in sight (and hope the other guy doesn't hasn't set up for this - I did ) Titans are just the same as a normal vehicle except they have damage capacity and things like void sheilds (just like a LR which has reinforced armour), so my thinking would be any AT weapon can hurt them things like a Devastator formation (or even the humble SM squad) with 8 missile shots could take down a titan. Termies are great for this too, if you teleport near the titan and then opened up onto the titan with sustained fire with 2 Ass. cannons per base (8 total) with an AT 5+ and the bonus for sustained fire then makes it AT 4+. another option: A unit of Predator Anniahilators with four AT 4+ shots with the Twin Lazcannon and 8 shots with the AT 5+ lazcannons. Once again add sustained fire...

Thanks for that CG. Its more the lack of Titan killing weapons that I was referring to. Marines don't seem to be able to dish out as much firepower as other races. If I could take this opportunity to pick a few brains then... Here's my Guard list from this game - Could someone post a Marine army list that would work well against it... Regimental HQ + Flak - 550 Mechanised Infantry Company + Flak - 450 Super-Heavy Tank Company (Baneblades) + Flak + Ogryns - 600 Rough Rider Platoon - 150 Artillery Battery (Manticores) - 250 Super-Heavy Tank Platoon (Shadowsword) - 200 Vulture Squadron - 300 2 x Warhound Titans - 500 3000pts - 8 Activations - 7 Commissars (1 in each formation except the Manticores) I'm not claiming that this is the greatest list known to mankind or anything like that but I have little expereince with Marines and was wondering what kind of list they could use to effectively counter this kind of army. Many thanks for any help Oh... One other question that came up during this battle - Do normal I.G. Infantry (with no armour save) recieve a save if the Chimera they are in is blown up? We decided no but would like to know if anyone knows for sure. Thanks again. Steve.

Thats a lot of open ground for the marines to cross when they are facing that many guns! I would be interested in how it ended up turning out if you guys tried using some fairly heavy cover or hills in the middle of the table.
Lack of TK weaponry is one of the weaknesses of the Marine list but they can still effectively face armies that field war engines. Unfortunately they are probably one of the harder armies to use in Epic which is kind of the opposite to 40K.

Epic Marines as mark says isn't the easy beginner army. I think it's actually one of the hardest to use.
- Pred Annialators - Land Raiders - Whirlwinds on sustained fire
They would be my pick against War Engines. For larger titans marines do suffer. Then there was good old Epic: 40 000, though the game was flawed, one of the shining lights was the fact that the Imperium were one army! Mix in guard and SM forces together was encouraged.
